English Festival
May 13, 2010
Duquesne University
Dear Student,
You are participating in the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English Festival to be held May 13, 2010 at Duquesne University.
All students must do the following since this reading is part of your Language Arts curriculum:
1.Read six books. The school will provide the books. For most selections, you will be assigned fifty pages to be read each week and given two class periods to do your reading. You are to take notes that will be used to help answer an essay test given each week. These notes will be stapled to your test and will be worth 25 % of that test grade. If you need to take your assigned book home be certain that the book is in school for class. If you forget your book you will be given other work to do and you will have to make up the English Festival work at home. You must also complete the projects listed below. Each student must pay the $13.25 registration fee, due by November 13, 2009 and the fee for the bus at the time of the festival, unless we can arrange for drivers.
2.In addition to reading each of the books, Teams are expected to do the following:
a. Each team must develop five trivia questions for each book. To do these write the question and four possible multiple-choice answers with the correct answer underlined. Questions must be typed with the title of each book at the top of each page. Put the page number of the answer in parenthesis after the question. A single cover page should indicate the name of the school and the names of all members of the team.
b.Each team must make a video (standard VHS format or DVD). This will be five minutes in length and based on or in response to one or more of the assigned readings. The video must be labeled with the school name and the team number. A parent must be present at the time of the filming of the video.
3.Each student is to do the following individual project:
· Art Portfolio: Students are to submit from 3 to 6 illustrations based on any one or more of their readings. Illustrations must be on 8 ½ by 11 white paper. The artist’s name, school and the book source are to be printed in the lower right hand corner of the illustration. Illustrations must be dark enough to be reproduced.
· Students are to participate in a writing competition based on their reading of Many Ly’s Roots and Wings in which they write about a time in their life when they felt another person, a friend, a member of their family, a teacher or even a total stranger misunderstood and/or misinterpreted what they were doing. (Approximately 1 ½ pages double spaced - get a word count.) A single cover page should contain the name of the school and the student’s name.
Please have your parents sign the form at the bottom and return it to me along with the $13.25 registration fee by November 13. 2009 in an envelope marked English Festival.
Please keep the remainder of these pages for reference.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bishop
